    Description

    Offered for sale is a
    beautiful
antique opalescent glass whimsy bowl made
(most likely) by Sowerby of England, in the late 1890s or early years of the 20th century
.  The pattern is called PIASA BIRD (original name remains unknown).  This one has a wide ruffle-crimped edge, pulled inward on two sides to form a kind of banana-bowl shape.  It stands on three short feet, each detailed with a clawed bird's foot.   Above each foot is a sort of mythical bird that appears to have a bearded human face.  The glass has a beautiful fiery white opalescent color, fading to clear glass at the base.  The crimped rim also has a thin clear edge.
The bowl WOULD measure 7 3/4 inches (19.7cm) in diameter, but because of the pulled-in sides it's
7 3/4 inches (19.7cm) long but only 3 1/2 inches 8.9cm) wide in the middle
.  It would have been 2 3/4 inches (7.0cm) tall at the rim, but the pulled-in sides reach to 4 inches (10.2cm) high. It is shown with a U.S. quarter in the first three pictures, to give an accurate impression of the size at a glance.  This is a magnificent antique opalescent piece for your collection!
The bowl has no chips, cracks, scratches or repairs.  Really excellent condition, esp. considering it's well over 100 years old.
